I'll Procrastinate Tomorrow

I was set a deadline by colleagues to write a blog for publication every Monday & my musing on procrastination are the first to be written on time!

Does that make me awkward?

I love working in the education & training sector & the feeling I get from helping people achieve their qualification rivals that of producing a perfect weld on a stainless-steel food grade road tanker, which is pretty good if you’ve never experienced that. But I’m a self-diagnosed administration phobic.

My job is increasingly administrative & my colleagues are increasingly frustrated by my aversion to anything adminy!

This, as you can imagine is contradicted by my love of data, action plans & reports when tracking candidate progress & business-related stuff.

I can always find something more important to do when I have an admin day. It’s surprising how often my desk needs tidying or that piece of loose thread on my sleeve really needs staring at, & I can always find time to look for ways to put off my procrastinating just to give me that extra time of doing, well, that stuff that I really need to do.

We only ever get today once & I have so many dreams, ambitions & goals that must be achieved that I really do need to get on with my priority stuff.

Out of our 24 hours in each day I sleep for 6, work for 10 (you can see where this is going) once you take out the basic ablution stuff, travelling, nose picking & other related things, time with family each day is limited.

So, when you consider that we have 60 seconds in each minute. 60 minutes in each hour & as we previously established 24 hours in a day, we only have 86400 seconds to play with each day.

I find that sobering when I consider how much time I allocate to complaining. The car in front isn’t going fast enough, there’s a queue in this shop & yeah, I have an admin day to get through.

I wouldn’t waste my money in the way I waste my seconds, but I always find the time to procrastinate.

Using my time to be in the moment, enjoying my journey, chatting with people in the queue & enjoying each part of my working day will give me the opportunity to use my valuable seconds wisely, because once they’ve been used, they are gone.

Distractions can often be time bandits & although I’m just a young spritely chap time can pass quickly if not used deliberately.

I don’t imagine that I’ll be an administration cheerleader any time soon, but I will try to use my precious time more effectively & save procrastinating for tomorrow.

I hope you have a great & productive week.

Cheers

Noel
